Girls Varsity Cross Country, Varsity Cross Country · Martini Wins Big Blue Invitational

The Rising Sun Shiner cross-country teams competed at the 50th Annual Big Blue Invitational hosted by Jennings County on Tuesday, September 15th. The Shiners joined 11 other teams to compete in the 5 kilometer race at Muscatatuck County Park.

The boys team ran well despite the warm evening with Junior Zach Martini dominating the competition with a time of 16:47. Zach was the only male competitor to run under 17 minutes. Martini was followed by junior Colton Henry in 25th, Trevor Levi close behind in 26th, and Claudio Gallegos and Matt Martini rounding out the Shiner top five.

The girls did not field a complete team due to scheduling conflicts with soccer and volleyball. However, sophomore Kora Powell ran a tough race despite the heat to finish in the middle of the pack. She was followed by Jessica Koons, Kaleigh Mann, and Olivia Gutierrez.

The Shiners will race again this Saturday at the South Dearborn Invitational. They look to have fast races to prepare for Sectional and Regional, which South Dearborn will host on October 10th and October 17th. The race site is at Moores Hill Elementary this year.
