The Shiners played outstanding basketball for most of the early afternoon affair on Saturday. The Shiners defense was on full display in the 1st half holding the visitors from Southwestern (Shelby) to 11 points for the half leading 16 to 11 at the midway point. The Shiners stretched the lead out to 9 in the 3rd quarter but the Spartans closed it back up to 4 by the end of the period trailing the Shiners 27-23. The Spartans then picked up the pace making baskets on their first 6 possessions of the 4th quarter including two 3 pointers and an old fashioned 3 point play. Just like that the Shiners were playing from behind for the first time all day. The Shiners clamped back down defensively after the early 4th quarter offensive outburst by Southwestern, but were unable to muster up enough offense to get all the way back and fell 43-39. The Shiners were led by Landon Cole’s 17 points, followed by TJ Manifold’s 11 points and Peyton Merica’s 9 points. The Shiners (3-14, 2-1) travel to Southwestern-Hanover on Friday, February 14 and host Lawrenceburg on Saturday February 15. Both games start at 6:00pm.
