Thursday was a memorable night for so many reasons.  First and foremost, we won the program’s first softball sectional championship since 2015.  Individually, this was the first sectional title any of the girls on our roster have experienced in any sport.  So that makes it even more special.

Second, the crowd was amazing both in number and volume.  Our players appreciate the support and feed off the positive energy.  Thank you fans!

Third, it was an incredibly long day.  It started around 7:30 am getting as much of the field covered as possible with rain coming in.  Unfortunately, with the ground already nearly saturated from prior rain, the tarps did little good as much of the field had ponding water by 11 am.  It took five full hours to get the field playable.

After the game start got pushed back an hour due to thunder just prior to the warmup period, we got dumped on again by rain in the fifth inning.  Because of travel time for Hauser, the Jets were willing to stay as late as possible to finish.  A decision was made to reprep the field.  An army of individuals (coaches, administrators, former players and parents) decended on the field with rakes, shovels, couch cushions, a sump pump, shop vac and a wheelbarrow to get the field back in playing condition in only 80 minutes.  It was an incredible sight and a wonderful show of teamwork.  Thanks to everyone who pitched in!

Once play resumed, fog moved in, especially in right field.  At times you couldn’t see the defender. But after working so hard twice to make the field playable, no one was willing to let fog hold up the game any further.

Finally in the seventh inning, Montgomery and Poling blasted a pair of home runs to left which put an exclaimation point on an incredible night.  Then Pitts put a bow on the sectional title by retiring the final three hitters in order including the last two by strikeout.

What a night!

While I am very pleased Sydney Pitts, Sydney Bostic, Lindsay Montgomery, Cora Poling and Abby Wallace were named to the All-Sectional Team, I am simply overjoyed with the effort of the entire roster and how hard they have worked this season to achieve this goal.   They are indeed a very happy bunch of young ladies, but they are not satisfied.  We host a good Indianapolis Lutheran team in the Regional on Tuesday at 7 pm.  We hope to see you there!
