Shiners News · Shiner JV avenges early season loss to South Decatur 42-38

It was an odd night where the Shiner JV played a different opponent than the Varsity, but it was also a great night as both teams won their contests to pull both teams back to .500 on the season.  Due to Waldron not fielding a JV team, the Shiners filled their JV schedule opening with South Decatur, a team who beat the Shiners in the 3rd game of the year by 11 points.  In the first meeting the Cougars jumped out to a 19-7 1st quarter lead.  This time things were different and at the end of the 1st quarter the Shiners only trailed by one point  9-8 and by 3 at the half.  The 3rd quarter was the difference in this contest as the Shiners clamped down on defense holding the Cougars to 3 points in the stanza and scoring 11 points of their own taking a 5 point lead into the 4th and although South Decatur ratcheted up their defense to full court pressure in the 4th, the Shiners were able to hold them off winning 42-38.  The Shiners were led in scoring by Sophomore Guard Chris Bowne who had 12 points in only 2 quarters of action and Sophomore Guard Landon Cole who had 8 points in only 1 quarter of action.  South Decatur Junior Guard Dominic Walters led the Cougars with 15 points with only 4 points in the 2nd half, that mainly in part to the defensive efforts of Freshman Kendall Montgomery and Jordan Parsons, who both spent most of their night taking turns trying to keep Walters at bay.  The Shiners (6-6,1-0) return to action on January 31 in a rare Thursday game as they travel to Milan for a 6:00 conference match up with the Indians.
