Nick Koons drives in the Rivertown against Lawrenceburg
In what many would consider an upset, the 1A Shiners knocked off 3A rival Lawrenceburg 55-47 in the first round of the Rivertown Classic late Thursday night. The night cap game of the 1st round ended an exciting night of basketball that saw Switzerland County defeat the host South Dearborn Knights 71 to 68 in the opener, setting up an ORVC Championship match up between the Shiners and the Pacers.
The Shiners led the Tigers on Thursday almost the entire game jumping out to a 21-13 lead at the end of the 1st quarter. A more deliberate offensive attack yielded the Shiners their best start to any game this season. The Shiners took a 30 to 19 halftime lead to the locker room but the Shiners knew the Tigers would come back out hungry as Coach Scholl implored the team to stay the course and be prepared for any pressure the Tigers might bring. Senior Guard Noah Pflum picked up his 4th foul at the end of the 3rd quarter as the Shiners ended the period still leading 43-32. With Pflum on the bench, a frantic 4th quarter push by Lawrenceburg got the lead down to 4 but the Shiners answered the Tiger push with a few baskets of their own as the Shiners took the W 55-47. Shiners Senior Nick Koons led all scorers with 22 points going 9 of 10 from the FT line. Senior Guards Jake Bovard 14 points and Noah Pflum 12 points had their best offensive games of the season to date. The Tigers were led by the Yoon brothers who scored 36 of their teams 47 points. Older brother Gavin had 20 points going 8 for 10 from the charity stripe and also scoring 11 points in the 4th quarter. Younger brother Freshman Garrett Yoon scored 16 for the Tigers.
The Shiners (3-6) will play Switzerland County (3-8) for the Championship of the Rivertown classic on Saturday night at approximately 8pm. The consolation game between South Dearborn and Lawrenceburg begins at 5:30 pm with the cheer competition following that game. The Championship game will commence approximately 20 minutes after the cheer competition.
