Shiners News · Varsity Boys lose 2 at Holiday Tournament

Final score vs North Decatur

The Shiner Varsity dropped 2 games at the 2nd annual Charger Holiday Classic at North Decatur High School on Friday.  The Shiners opened up at 10:30 am against the host #17 ranked 2A Chargers.  Although the boys struggled offensively they fought their way back to  a 4 point deficit with 2 minutes to go in the 3rd quarter 36 to 32.  However a turnover and a  quick couple of buckets by North Decatur tuned their 4 point lead into an 8 point lead by the end of the frame and the Chargers never looked back winning 54-42.  The Shiners were led in scoring by Senior Nick Koons with 17 points going 6/8 at the charity stripe.  Senior Jake Bovard added 9 points in the loss.

The Shiners found themselves in the consolation game Friday night against the Yorktown Tigers.  Yorktown proved a match up nightmare for the Shiners as the Tigers had more height and girth in the post than the  Rising Sun as the Shiners were still playing without Senior power forward Wesley Rider.  The Shiners started out with 2 quick buckets to start the game but the offense fell stagnant again and the boys trailed 29 to 16 after one half of play and things didn’t improve in the 2nd half as the Shiners fell 61 to 41.  6’3″ swing man Luke Dunn led the Tigers with 15 1st half point en route to a game high 31 points.  Post player JJ Evans had 12 points for Yorktown.  The Shiners (2-6) were paced by Nick Koons with 18 points (7/7 FTs) and Junior post man TJ Manifold who scored 9 in the loss.

The Shiners return to action on Thursday January 3rd at approximately 8:00 pm as they take on Lawrenceburg in the first round of the Rivertown Classic at South Dearborn High School.
