Shiners News · Shiners push #8 Oldenburg but come up short

Nick Koons goes for a game high 18 points at Oldenburg

The Varsity Shiners came out hot against the host #8 ranked Twisters as Senior Noah Pflum knocked down a couple of quick 3 pointer and the boys took an 8 to 3 lead early.  Oldenburg battled back and took a 16 to 9 lead at the end of the 1st quarter.  The Shiners outperformed OA in the 2nd quarter with tough defense holding the Twisters leading scorer Jake Johnson scoreless in that frame and the Shiners tightened the game up trailing 26 to 22 at the half.  Tough defense was the prescription in the 3rd for the Shiners as they held Johnson scoreless again in the quarter, however the Shiners couldn’t muster much offense in the quarter only scoring 4 points and found them selves trialing 36 to 26 after 3 quarters of play.  2 minutes into the 4th the Shiners got the Twister lead down to 8 points as the Shiners had possession to cut into the lead further, however a costly turnover hurt the Shiners and OA  Junior Jake Johnson finally got his offense going again in the 4th scoring 7 points in the frame en route to putting the Shiners away 50 to 34. Andrew Oesterling  of Oldenburg (5-2) lead the Twisters with 14, Jake Johnson scored 13, well below his season average of 21.7.  Senior Nicks Koons led all scorers with 18 and Noah Pflum had 9 for the Shiners (2-4).  The Shiners return to action on December 28th as the play in the Charger Holiday Classic tournament at North Decatur.  The JV will battle the host Chargers at 9am in the main gym with the varsity also playing the Chargers in the main gym at 10:30am.
