On thursday, December 28th, the Lady Shiners traveled to Speedway, Indiana for a 2-game tournament.  This is the 3rd year the Lady Shiners have participated in the Speedway Holiday Tournament.  In the first game, Speedway defeated North Putnam.  The Lady Shiners took on Indiana Deaf in the second game.  Indiana Deaf gave the Lady Shiners all they could handle, as the Lady Shiners started the game very flat.  Indiana Deaf lead for almost all the game.  The final two minutes, saw the Lady Shiners, trailing by 9, battle back to defeat the Indiana Deaf.  Sydney Pitts hit a 12 ft jumper from the baseline area with around 12 seconds left to give the Lady Shiners the lead, and then took a game saving charge to seal the win.  The Lady Shiners won 57 to 54  to move on to the Championship game against Speedway.

The Consolation game saw Indiana Deaf defeat North Putnam

 

The Championship game, pitted Rising Sun versus Speedway.  Speedway started off game hot and on a mission.  They hit some deep 3’s and frustrated the Lady Shiners taking an early 18 to 8 lead.  To end the first quarter, the Lady Shiners battled back scoring 7 straight to end the first quarter down 15 to 18.  The 2nd, 3rd and 4th quarters again saw both teams go on some runs.  Speedway was able to keep the lead during most of these runs, though.  Rising Sun was able to keep the game close going into the 4th quarter.  This game came down to the closing seconds.  Rising Sun was able to go up with 50 to 48 with a 8 seconds left.  Speedway was able to come down the floor.  Speedway”s point guard looked to take a game winning 3, but Lucy Carrigan was able to block the ball out of bounds.  With .08 seconds left,  Rising Sun called a few timeouts, forcing Speedway to rethink their out of bounds play.   Speedway was able to get off a last second shot on their in-bounds play from 12 ft away from the basket, but the shot sailed to the left as time ran out.  This is the 2nd time in 3 years the Lady Shiners have brought home a championship trophy from the Speedway Tournament.  Scoring Leaders for the Lady Shiners in championship game:  Lucy Carrigan 30pts, Kinsey Price 2pts, Sydney Pitts 1pt, Danyka Groover 6pts, and Maddi Wilson 11pts.  Free Throws: 16/21
