The IHSAA released the Sectional alignments for six sports (boys and girls soccer, volleyball, boys and girls basketball, and football) yesterday at their executive meeting for the 2017-18 and 2018-19 seasons. Baseball and softball alignments will be released this summer after the completion of the Spring sports season. For Rising Sun, the volleyball sectional will look familiar as nothing changed. The Shiners will continue to be in a sectional with Hauser, Jac-Cen-Del, Oldenburg Academy, South Decatur, Southwestern (Shelby), and Waldron. South Decatur remains in class 1A in volleyball, but moves up to class 2A in boys and girls basketball. The Shiner basketball teams will welcome one new school to their sectional and say goodbye to South Decatur, which means Rising Sun will travel to a new host site for boys basketball as South Decatur served as host since 2004. Morristown will be a new face to the boys and girls basketball sectionals as the other five schools remain the same – Rising Sun, Hauser, Jac-Cen-Del, Oldenburg Academy, Southwestern (Shelby) and Waldron.
The big changes come with boys and girls soccer with the change from two classes to three classes. On the boys side, the sectional will consist of the Ohio River Valley Conference schools – Rising Sun, Jac-Cen-Del, Milan, Shawe Memorial, South Ripley, Southwestern (Hanover) and Switzerland County. The boys sectional will see an increase in number of teams from the four it had been for the past several years to now having seven. The biggest change is that the Shiners are no longer in a sectional with long time nemesis Lawrenceburg, who has enjoyed much success in recent years. The girls sectional will go from a seven team sectional down to a five team sectional and will also no longer include perennial power Lawrenceburg. The new sectional will have Rising Sun, Milan, Oldenburg Academy, South Ripley, and Switzerland County. Rising Sun Principal/Athletic Director, Noel Bostic was part of the boys and girls soccer realignment committee.
